Five Ten Freerider Long term review

35421970653_77fed18d6e_o

These shoes are clearly summer shoes, the shoes have venting holes on the top in the front & on the sides, which work great, I can feel the wind blowing through.

The outer sole is the same as on the ESP version, with the same trusted S1 rubber.

The Freerider is a quite breathable & lightweight shoe, they are higher over the ankle than the EPS version.

They have differences but they feel like on my feet.

Feel & comfort.

But the Freerider ESP is comfortable when running, the sole bends as much as running shoes upwards, I think the Freerider shoe is a well thought out shoe.

I can feel the surface I walk on & the pedals, without any discomfort, which gives me a good feel of what the bike is doing & this is a good thing for walking up things you can’t ride over/on.

Pros:

  • The laces don’t wear out after months of use they are like new, unlike the 2015 Impact shoes.
  • Very easy to tie and untie, when tying the laces, i bend my legs down and tie the shoe, with few millimetre of room between the laces and the tongue, which gives perfect tightness, without Hurting , and when doing it this way I know it’s going to be right, if I do it this way, I can tuck the laces on to the side.
  • the shoelaces don’t untie if you tighten them properly.
  • Easy to take off, the tongue won’t restricts you from taking the shoes on and off fast.
  • The Tongue stays in place.

Freerider ESP review

Verdict: Recommended

You can’t find a better platform summer high top Mtb shoe on the market right now, if you want this, Five Ten is the only choice, I only ride with higher shoes, protethey have added protection.

2017 Five Ten Freerider ESP Updated Review 01.11.2017

I have used these shoes for one winter and few wet summer & spring days.

The shoe is  flexible the right way(up) but not too flexible, but won’t bend down(very important if you ride hard & ride on  gnarly trails and jump, this result in a shoe that is very comfortable to walk in, the Impact  shoes much stiffer, but they are still quite comfortable to walk in, I even played soccer with them once, but definitely not ideal for that use, obvious reasons.

Feel & comfort.

But the Freerider ESP is comfortable when running, the sole bends as much as running shoes upwards, I think the Freerider shoe is a well thought out shoe.

Winter use:

I have seen reviews of this shoe, saying that they will not be so warm on very cold days, but I assume they did not wear wool sock, Like I do, I have not had any issues with cold feet with these shoes. of course there is a limit to the isolation,I wear size 44, and there is room for 2 pairs of wool socks.

I have used the Freerider esp down to -11 Celsius, with 2 pairs wool socks, I stayed warm.

Pros:

  • The laces don’t wear out after months of use they are like new, unlike the 2015 Impact shoes.
  • The long tongue that extends higher than the shoe itself.

  • Easy to take off, the tongue won’t restricts you from taking the shoes on and off fast.
  • The Tongue stays in place.
  • waterproof,  water won’t come in, unless it gets in the upper part of the shoe or your socks.
  • the tip of the shoe is stiff, I hit some hard surfaces, few times and I did not even feel it.
  • But there was no big wear or damage on the shoe, the outer sole failed before this would happen, but FiveTen offer replacement soles, on their site, but I have not seen it in any shop yet. http://www.fiveten.com/us/accessories?___SID=U

Cons:

  • 32804768015_88df88e776_o
Water can come in where the fabric mesh is. friction damage caused by shoe touching the crankarm.

maybe reinforcing the shoe lace holes for more durability, other than this I can’t think of anything else, Time will tell how long this will last. But so far I did not have any issues with the holes for the laces.

  • could be as high as the summer version with leather higher up on the ankles, to provide better protection.

Wear update July 2017:

After 1 winter plus some wet summer weeks the outer sole gave up.

There is a hole in the outer sole, but water did not come trough but this mgiht change,
The damage in this area already began in the winter but got bit worse, you will see the same type of wear in the the same place on the standard/summer version of the Freerider.

The inner sole was in pretty good condition, but the was a bit of wear in the big toe area, but once the soles wear out you can buy new ones.

autumn of 2017 I noticed some changes:

Five Ten claims the whole front of the shoe is Leather, but the brown stuff is clearly not leather, it’s  most likely latex cover, the inner layer looks to be leather though. the outer sole started to separate from the rest of the shoe, but the stitching stopped it from going any further. the tips of the shoes are stiffer for added protection.

Verdict: Recommended

The shoes will outlast the outer soles, so getting replacement soles might be a good idea.

The Freerider ESP is the most comfortable winter shoes I have ever used, I have used winter boots and winter shoes from several brands, none of them can compare to Five Ten.

If you replace the outer sole & repair the wear on the fabric, you should be able to use these shoes at least 1 more winter, But I think they will last even longer if not abused too much.

So far it’s the only proper winter cycling flat/platform shoe.

I think the Freerider shoe is a well thought out shoe.

Review: 2016 Five Ten Impact high

2016 (top) vs  2015
2015 vs 2016

Almost waterproof, the fabric part on the front and sides is waterproof(not tested with a pressure washer or firehose).

I have ridden these shoes in wet & winter conditions
ButIwanted to test it even further and up close, so I tested the 2016 FiveTen Impact high shoes,w ith water from the sink on full, the fabric part is waterproof
but the issue is the lip gives small gaps even when properly tight
so when the shoe moves there will be water there and come in.
so you will only get little bit wet in the worst  wet conditions.
I got mine from chain reaction cycles,b ut the first time I tried i had to return them,t he stealth sole was not properly glued on,b ut the second time I received a shoe with properly glued sole,l ater I ordered Freerider ESP,F from Bikeshop.no and they were perfect:-)

Pros:

  • the tongue stays in place, which makes the shoe more comfortable than the 2015 model.
  • better laces than 2015 model
  • the shoes only have holes for the laces in one place, unlike the 2015 model, which had fabric looks under the leather part and holes in the leather, but the 2016 model have holes that are reinforced with metal rings, which means there the issue with fast wearing laces is gone.
  • As stiff sole as the 2015 model
  • the shoes will fit with high feet with fat toes.
  • Even more durable than the 2015 model, the new design ahs strong fabric, so the issue with the side of the shoe wearing, won’t happen,
  • Good price
  • the sizing is the same as 2015.
  • Easy to tighten the laces, much easier than 2015 model, and re-lacing will be much easier if you need to, this is because of the big lace holes with metal rings.

Cons:

  • apart from No reflective stripes or logos.
  • not 100% water proof, but pretty close, But if you need this Five Ten Freerider ESP got gutted tongue which offers 100% waterproofing, I have them and I love ’em. make sure the tongue is straight, and make sure you have it as tight as you can without causing discomfort when you want to ride in the wet/and or rain if you have not got the ESP shoes yet.

Verdict:

Is it worth upgrading if you got the 2015 model? Yes I think so,the improvements are significant, but Fiveten offers replacement soles so if you worn out your  old shoes you can fix them later.

this is a good shoe even better than the 2015 model, I absolutely can recommend this shoe.all the pros of the 2015 and none of the cons.

I love FiveTen shoes, in my opinion they make the best mtb shoes on the market, but I see more brands releasing new platform shoes, but none of them can compete with FiveTen yet.

Review: 2015 Five Ten Impact High- October 2016 update

Corrected. 04.03.2017(typos & some )

The reasons I got these shoes:

the main reasons I got these shoes is the protection it gives for the ankle, and use them all year and I can wear them over my rain pants.

Five Ten is probably the most used and well known flat shoes on the market.

as far as I know there is no other MTB shoe that gives you ankle protection, these shoes do not have any protection padding, it’s just that these shoes go over the ankle and are thick so will give protection against smashing your feet against stuff.

Almost waterproof: The tongue is not waterproof unlike 2017 Freerider Esp

The only way to get wet in these shoes is if rains come through the shoe tongue or the top of the shoe-pants tucked into them. But if you don’t tighten the shoe laces properly you can get quite wet.

The venting holes don’t make any difference.

But I do not recommend standing too long in water where the tongue gets under, it will eventually soak up water&  when you bend the shoe water will come between the tongue.

five ten impact high- shoe sole flex

Pros

  • stiff sole but you are still able to walk in these shoes without any issues.
  • the stiffer sole makes my foot more stable and does not twist like with softer running shoes.
  • comfortable
  •  The leather on these shoes is durable.Even there are venting holes(that don’t really work).
  • the shoes will fit with high feet with fat toes.
  • Very durable outer sole After almost 6 months:26448255655_a0f22c77f6_b

    Wear 16 august 2016
  • Very sticky sounds like you have jam under your shoes, but of course, on very wet and slippery or slimy roots and such, it will not help with anything no matter how good rubber you got.
  • reflective logo
  • good side protection around the whole shoe, but on the top of the shoe you will not get the same protection but if it had that it would probably be uncomfortable.
  • will protect your rear part fo your feet against the pedal bite.

Cons

  • weight
  • Some design flaw which results in wear
  • I got water in the shoe o n a rainy day and soaked trails when the shoe whole was bent, even though the laces were tight.
  • The outside -side material/side venting wears down, stones, dirt, mud, collects there and the friction tears it apart.
    IMG_20160216_220820
The friction from riding tears  apart the fabric on the sides of the shoe and the tongue
    Tongue wear 15 May 2016

    IMG_20160216_220825

Replacing laces is tricky if you use the original fabric loops, they are so tight and in such angle, it’s very tricky, that’s why I later just use the holes in the leather which is much easier to and will not wear the laces as fast.

  • waI had issues with the laces slip, they undo them self slowly, but after 15-10 minutes, but I later changed to some other shorter and grippy laces,b ut the new laces snapped too, which is caused by the fabric lace guides.
  • The tongue design result in the tongue sliding up to the side, the 2016 model has a standard tongue, where this is not an issue, but the tongue was still sliding up this way, this is a design flaw.

mine came with sticky glue , this only issue I had with these shoes, not really a issue because this has no effect on anything there is no necessary to have glue there at all.i have not returned them because really need these shoes.

I switched to shorter laces with more grip:

After almost 2 years of use:

11 October I noticed a hole in the outer sole.
The new 2016 shoes had arrived, so I am using the new ones.

here are the measurements of my foot.

So these shoes are actually a bit too long for my feet, but the width is perfect in size 44, so that why I did not go lower.

the size is very similar to Adidas running shoe sizes, or identical

I have been using these shoes both in + and – degrees,  you will get bit sweaty and warm on hot days, But it’s worth the sacrifice for the protection and grip the shoe provides.

I have used the shoes in -6 degrees Celsius with wool socks, on a normal intensity ride, but for slow casual riding or commute you would need 2 socks.

Things to improve:

  • making the shoe lighter
  • Grippier laces
  • side shoe vent material should be replaced, with leather or something wight similar strength.

Conclusion

If you want an all year all round shoe, these are a good choice, but buy new shoelaces, and you have the best MTB flat shoe in my opinion.

If you ride in trainers/running shoes then you are missing out big, the amount of grip these shoes give is good.the have to lift you your feet to move it on the pedal, it sticks so well, but of course walking on ice or wet surface you lose grip.

February 2016 update: some wear on the top on the side of the shoe where the shoe tongue goes. the sole wear is minimal.

I have ordered the 2016 model, but need to return them because of faulty glueing, but I will review these shoes after I have used them a while.
